JT's and fleaman's initial comments simply stated they didn't take issue with the advice given in the book. A couple other posters did not either. They were subsequently accused of not understanding the seriousness of child abuse. They were also accused of supporting WT's mishandling of child abuse cases. That's not fair.

As you wrote, each person's experience is different, and more importantly, each person will respond differently. Some posters, sadly, are so damaged from their experience they are unable to step back from the issue and look at the article objectively, factoring in the the context of when it was written (circa 2003), what secular programs were teaching at the time, etc. Instead, they chose to attack, but I understand that the attacks came from an emotionally painful place. I am so appreciative at moments like this that I was born an INTJ, which probably helped me to respond differently, because 'there, but for the grace of God, go I.'

It's really a sad thread because it documents the long-term damage that child abuse causes to some individuals. Lady Lee especially, at some quiet moment, you should print-out this thread and review it to compare your responses to what fleaman and I (along with some others) actually wrote. Perhaps a break from 'writing' about child abuse issues is in order?

It is incomplete because it does not address the full range of sexual abuses that a perpetrator can use on his or her victims. I guess you missed my response earlier where I said.

Oh, I didn't miss your earlier response/s, but the arguments were so beyond the subject matter of this thread I decided not to comment on them. I was being kind because you are so emotionally invested in the subject. Nevertheless, as you are aware, or should be aware, the book was written for parents to use to start discussions with children. These "stories" were never meant to be, or promoted as, an exhaustive treatise on each subject.

However, what I think is interesting is how you have resorted to such a nasty tone just because I disagree with you on this one article, while I have been very respectful towards you. That's very unseemly behavior LL.

LOL! Too late! Someone else already 'educated me.' I am a survivor--not a victim--of childhood sexual abuse by a presiding overseer (I know that's the old term). That is why I was glad when this book came out and why I repeatedly reviewed this information with my daughters.

You simply made the fatal error of childishly assuming that I was unfamiliar with the subject merely because I disagreed with you.

I must say, how you have handled yourself on this thread has caused me to lose a great amount of respect for you LL. Clearly, you lack the ability to have a reasoned discussion regarding child abuse.

I’m sorry you started the thread too! I have particular disdain for people who state an opinion, ask others to comment on whether or not they agree, and then become angry when people tell them they do not agree and why.

This is what the text says maintaining its context:"How can you protect your body from people who do bad things like this?---First of all, do not let anybody play with your sex organs. If someone tries to do this, say firmly in a loud voice: "Stop that! I am going to tell on you!" And if the person say that what happened is your fault, don't believe that. It is not true. Just go and tell.

This study examines the efficacy, as experienced by offenders with their victim , of self-protection strategies used in child sexual abuse cases. It also investigates whether the efficacy of self-protection varies according to victim characteristics. The sample consists of 94 adult offenders who sexually abused a single child and who agreed to provide confidential self-report data on the efficacy of self-protection strategies used by their victim . Strategies taken into account are: (1) yelling or screaming, (2) fighting back, (3) saying no, (4) saying they didn't want to, (5) crying, (6) telling someone else about the abuse , (7) saying they were scared, (8) demanding to be left alone, (9) saying they would tell someone, (10) saying that people are not supposed to touch their private parts, (11) trying to get away, and (12) yelling for help. Saying that they do not want to have sexual contact and saying "no" to the offender are the most effective strategies. Because they are more likely to use self-protection initially, younger girls are also more likely to prevent episodes of abuse than older girls.

It's an incomplete message because you have culled it from the rest of the paragraph that specifically says 'it's not their fault' if they do get abused. I agree that the opposite message would likely be given the reporting child by the elders/WTBTS, but the article itself is not a problem...in my opinion. However, if this article is a problem, then everything my girls were receiving at school was a problem also. And, I doubt that was the case.

Sabatious, the WTBTS's presumed ultimate intent in publishing the article has nothing to do with LITS's assertion.

The thread title clearly intimates that the GB "ultimately" (i.e., in the end) places the onus on the victim to stop the abuse. Nothing in that article supports that contention.

I distinctly remember the book's release because, at the time, I had two young daughters. I reviewed this very chapter with them repeatedly. The information was almost identical to what they were receiving contemporaneously at school. The picture is dramatic, but it merely shows a child in an empowered position.

LITS's argument is specious. S/he has explained herself since, but that does not change the fact that the information she originally posted did not support her argument.

The WTBTS makes enough errors. Making arguments against it consisting of tenuous links at best does nothing but make 'apostates' look 'hysterical.'

The difference is in thte actions of the WTS, they sweep abuse under the rug where as other institutions not only incourage a child to tell, but report to authorites

What does that have to do with the quote s/he posted? Nothing. The quote s/he posted was one of the more valuable things the WTBTS has ever written.

LITS, I don't see the difference between what the WTBTS wrote and any other 'resist and go tell' information provided to children at school.

Watchtower's Billion Dollars of Property Cannot Be Sold until Outcome of Conti Appeal

30 minutes ago i just got off the phone with some important players in this case, and some things were relayed to me concerning a lot of details of the outcome of the last two days of court.

i am passing this on.

cynthia hampton, one of the main players in the candace conti case (and a close friend of 28 years), just informed me of a further, far more powerful move by the state of california against the watch tower bible and tract society of new york, inc.. by order of the superior court of the state of california - county of alameda (see documents below), until the watch tower's appeal, which won't begin until august 13th and will take up to two years to settle due to due process of law, has forbidden the watch tower to sell any more of its $1 billion in assets in the borough of brooklyn until the appeals case is finished, to assure they won't shelter their monies in the light of this most huge and devastating sexual abuse scandal ever to hit the watch tower society, and perhaps any other single-victim lawsuit.

From the content and tone of your ubiquitous postings outlining your illustrious education and career, I would think that you are working for a big law firm that would support your efforts to be published. Doesn't your law firm require public service hours? Perhaps it would allow you to write an article instead.
